ABOVE SURABAYA- Then And Now

Published on May 31, 2024, to coincide with the 731st anniversary of the City of Surabaya, this is the first book to specifically present views of the City of Surabaya from the air along with brief historical information.

This book contains 339 aerial photographs of the city of Surabaya from around the 1920s until one hundred years later in 2024.

There are 116 old aerial photographs of the Dutch East Indies era and 100 of them were taken using a drone from the same perspective as the old aerial photographs.

This book is also equipped with complementary photos, inset photos, maps and illustrations, total 237 to make it easier to see and understand the long history of the city of Surabaya. A brief history of the city of Surabaya and captions for each photo complete this book, making it easier to understand the changes that have occurred over time in the city of Surabaya through aerial views.

The city of Surabaya, whose anniversary was established on May 31, 1293, is the 4th oldest city on the island of Java after the cities of Salatiga (750), Kediri (879) and Magelang (907).

With its age reaching 731 years in 2024, the city of Surabaya has a long history since the era of the Majapahit Kingdom in the 13th century until now.
During the Dutch East Indies era, the city of Surabaya grew into a developed trade and industrial city with Tanjung Perak Port as the main means for exporting and importing various trade commodities.

What is the current condition of the old Dutch East Indies era buildings? Does it still exist? Is there no trace of it anymore? Where is it located? How does the city of Surabaya currently look like as the 2nd largest city in Indonesia?

The MURI (Indonesian World-Record Museum) record for the book ABOVE JAKARTA is: The book that contains the most comparisons of aerial photographs of a city (Jakarta), past and present, with a minimum period of 50 years, with a total of 125 photos.

The book ABOVE JAKARTA won an award from the National Library of Indonesia as the 2nd best book in the photography category in 2022. The assessment was carried out by 5 judges from various backgrounds: 2 people are photography practitioners, 1 person from the Jakarta Art Institute, 1 person from the Agency/Language expert and 1 person from the National Library of Indonesia. While the assessment period is from 2016-2022.
